Patents
Patent is a legal right granted by a government that gives an inventor exclusive rights to make, use, and sell an invention for a limited period of time, typically 20 years from the filing date. This protection is meant to encourage innovation by allowing inventors to profit from their inventions, while also requiring them to publicly disclose the details of their invention.
There are three main types of patents:
- Utility patents: These cover new and useful inventions or discoveries, such as machines, processes, or manufactured goods.
- Design patents: These protect the unique visual qualities of a product, like its shape or appearance.
- Plant patents: These are granted to those who invent or discover new and distinct varieties of plants that can be asexually reproduced.
Once a patent is granted, others are prohibited from making, using, selling, or distributing the patented invention without the patent holder’s permission. In exchange for this exclusive right, the inventor must fully disclose the invention to the public in the patent application, which becomes publicly available.
